Day 29: A Holistic Approach - April 11, 2012

Hello Again,

I wanted to write up a quick post before the end of the evening. Today was another full day of therapy for Scott. One big event that marks today is the staff's assessment of how Scott is doing in the different programs. I love how they take a holistic approach to their care. It really does put a smile on my face knowing that each week the whole team of doctors, nurses, and therapists sit down together and talk about Scott's case.

Today they informed us that he will be staying another 3 to 4 weeks here at Barrows. The case worker sat down with me and talked about how he is doing in all the different areas. His body is recovering very well as many of us guessed it would. The brain injury portion is what will take the most time. Everyone here keeps asking me how I feel about his recovery and I can't help reply how wonderful I feel that it is going. I know we are seeing changes and improvements each and every day!!

We also found out that Scott will be taking a car ride to his Ophthalmology appointment on Friday this week. That means that tomorrow (fingers crossed) I will be trained on how to help Scott in and out of the car!! YIPPIE!! I love the idea of letting Scott have some freedom. I hope this opens some possibilities for us to make more trips out of the hospital... possibly even make it to church one Sunday.

Other daily things we worked on were:

Physical Therapy - Walking without the walker, going up and down stairs, and squats.
Occupational Therapy- Writing words with the right hand, He played the game "Perfection", He did some deciphering of coded text. (Where letters correspond with symbols)
Speech Therapy- Breaking down money amounts from dollars, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies.  He also did some comparison exercises... such as the difference between a football and a baseball.

After therapy he was able to take a nap. We had dinner together and talked about the day. Then we watched a talk from General Conference, Scott's request. After that we watched an episode of Big Bang Theory. He had some visitors come around 6:30. He played some Curious George Match Game with them. He did great with it. He was able to talk about his day with confidence which is nice to see. I only had to correct him a few times about inaccurate details. (Thank you Karen and Edwin for coming to see us!!)

After that I helped him shave, shower, and brush his teeth. We waited for the nurse to come in and change his wet bandages before he went to bed. While we waited we read scriptures together and said our prayers. Scott was able to read two scripture verses with me tonight as well as help me take turns during the day when we prayed over meals and had our nightly prayer. The nurse got a little tied up in helping another patient so I showed Scott the blog. We spent a few moments reading comments that everyone has been leaving. Scott's response to all of the comments were: "We are so blessed. Everyone is so nice and thoughtful. We have some really great friends."

I second his sentiments. We really do love you all!! Thank you for everything.

Love,
Ashley

  1. Ashley and Scott,

You are never far from our thoughts and always in our prayers! You probably don't have any idea how much we appreciate all of your posts! I usually read them with a Kleenex because it's just so overwhelming to hear about the progress Scott is making. We are amazed by both of you and are cheering you on! Lots of love, hugs and prayers from the Van Eerden's!

  2. Hehe, I keep thinking about this and hearing Scott saying, in the Old Spice Guy voice, "I'm in a car."
