Day 20: Close but Not Yet

So today has been interesting to say the least. We are learning so much about the business of health care as we journey through this experience. Patti spent a very very sleepless night with Scott. She said that he only got about half an hour of sleep around 6:00 am. So she was up all night with him.

Because he was so restless they worked on standing up and shifting his weight around on his feet. Patti would do this a number of times hopping that he would tucker out after awhile but no such luck.

My mom and I were able to get some rest back at the house. I woke up and made some meals for our day and then we headed back to the hospital.

Unfortunately when Scott did start to sleep this morning the construction crew began their work.(yeah they are doing construction on this floor in the room just next to Scott's.) Patti said it was so loud that she couldn't even hear the nurses when they came into talk to her. Patti asked them if they would please stop considering he has a traumatic brain injury. They finally stopped but Scott was already wide awake.

We spent much of the morning and afternoon wondering if we would be transferring to Barrows today or not. We were also eagerly anticipating the trach being reevaluated to be taken out or downsized. When the doctor came in he informed us that we would not be seeing a Pulmonologist due to the fact that we would be seeing one when we transfered to Barrows or back to Select. It was unclear as to what facility we would be going to. The doctor was saying that it often has to do with insurance and sometimes the one facility had a Pulmonologist and the other one doesn't. We knew that Select had a pulmonologist because we had talked with him there multiple times. But we were really questioning the fact that Scott has been doing so well and was told by the rehabilitation doctor over at Barrows that he is a perfect candidate to get started over there.

Thank heavens Patti spoke up and asked to see the social worker who was in charge of Scott's case as well as his discharge and transfer. She finally came into the room and informed us that we would be heading over to Barrows but there wasn't a bed currently available. She said that it there could be one available in the morning but it would be an hour by hour wait to see if something opens up. We stressed to her that communication with us is key!! We really wish that we would have been kept in the loop sooner.

As far as positives go Scott was able to eat a lot more soft foods today. We were also able to get him to sit on the bed side toilet and he was actually able to use the bathroom for himself. :) He has done so incredibly well he continues to impress everyone around him with his ability to heal. He is currently sleeping little tiny bits at a time. We just pray that he gets his rest and that tomorrow a room will become available so we can finally enter the area of experienced individuals who know so much about TBI.

I am going to end this here... I am starting to fall asleep while I am writing. (That means it's time to sleep)

So goodnight to all,

Love Ashley

  3. Ashley,

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight :) I know the road may seem to be winding right now but what peace it is knowing we have no control, right? God is good. I am so blessed to have met you and your sweet Scott today. I will be praying for restful nights and a speedy recovery.
