Mickey here back in support of Scott and Ashley. I had been so excited for the past couple
days at the thought of being with Scott again and experiencing his tremendous
progress. He certainly did not
disappoint. My orientation to the new
environment at Barrow and Scott’s mastery of it was a bit overwhelming in a
good way.
“Full Contact” is a phrase in the Moore household that we
use liberally to describe exceeding the norm.
For instance, we refer to one of our favorite family card games as “full
contact” canasta in reference to the no-holds-barred, win-at-all-costs way
everyone is expected to play. What I
witnessed my first few hours with Scott was “full contact” rehabilitation and
Scott is in it to win.
Scott has made huge progress with regaining the use of his
right arm and hand along with standing and walking on his own, without a
walker. I feel it’s just a matter of
days before he is cleared to do so. As
Ashley mentioned, he has an off-site appointment with his eye doctor on Friday
and we were told that we would actually be able to transport him
ourselves. This will be Scott’s first
independent excursion and another step closer to becoming an out-patient.
Mentally Scott continues to gain control of time and reason. He cruises through math exercises but has to
work very hard with association exercises like naming seven bodies of water or
naming seven presidents. This is difficult because often his creativity
takes over and he becomes stuck on a single thought or phrase. One of the functional math exercises involved
identifying the type and number of monitory currency needed for certain dollar
amounts. Bottom line is Scott can make change and is now employable,
another milestone for any parent raising a child! The other milestones we hope to see soon are
sleeping through the night and total bladder control and management.
My goal this week will be to begin working Scott in as
contributor to his blog, at first through prompted videos and then with his own
thoughts and reports. I know he has much
to share with everyone.
Best!
